Artist Statement

In the body of work titled "Memory Swamp" I'm bringing the swamp home. The swamp is a repository for personal demons and memories.

I'm interested in the dynamic nature of memories, constantly recreated through the act of remembering. Our mind is reshaping our original experiences while our body remembers what has been locked away.

In my work the dramatic event is over and we are left with the aftermath. Watercolor paintings and drawings portray the silence in strong, alluring colors and movement. Underneath the stiff appearance of the figures and interiors, memories awake. The structure tries to oppress the memory swamp, and the swamp threatens to collapse the structure.

I borrow images of women embedded in the collective memory by movies and advertising and I make them my own. I freeze the figures, leave them stagnant and mute, yet in a strange way, they speak for me.

In painting, I stand in the morass, partially numb, not knowing where the body ends and the swamp begins, I look out and I try to describe.
